It has been an interesting weekend!

Daggers in crisis (part 2)

Following our earlier report on what has been going on at the football club with regard to potential outside investment, this weekend saw significant developments ahead of an informal meeting of Full and Life Members with Glenn Tamplin scheduled for this evening at Victoria Road.

On Saturday, shortly after a fourth win in five games at Woking took the Daggers up to second in the National League table, an email emerged that had been sent from Daniel Groves at AGP Steel to potential sponsors of the club, dated the 18th of August, that stated "We have just purchased Dagenham and Redbridge Football club and we wanted to know if you would be interested in doing a little sponsorship!!"

As can be imagined, this kicked off a furore as the club cannot be sold under its present structure, and Members have not been asked to vote on a change of structure as yet.

Club Reaction

Chairman Dave Bennett (right) issued a statement on Sunday basically blaming the whole thing on Groves, who he described as "an over zealous employee".

It is understood that Groves is Glenn Tamplin's PA, and that Tamplin himself was on holiday in Spain, returning specifically for the meeting tonight, but that the email had been written and sent without Groves consulting with his boss or anyone else...

When questioned on whether it was AGP Steel that was attempting to buy the club, as implied in the email, or Mr Tamplin as an individual, Bennett assured DiggerDagger that this was not the case and it is Tamplin personally who is putting the money up.

This is key since it is a matter of public record that Tamplin has left a string of liquidated Construction Steel companies in his wake, and there is no reason to think that at some point down the line AGP Steel may not go the same way when it suits, potentially taking any assets it holds with it.

Good morning,

I believe that you received an email from me at some point in the last week, this email was factually incorrect.

Glenn Tamplin, currently at this time does not own Dagenham and Redbridge FC but yet is involved in ongoing discussions and negotiations to become a major shareholder in D&R FC as part of a consortium, and we hope a conclusion will be reached in the coming weeks.

I Apologise sincerely for the embarrassment caused to all concerned, Mr Tamplin, the existing Board of Directors, members and supporters.

The email that I sent was done off of my own back, without the knowledge of Mr Tamplin or anyone at Dagenham & Redbridge, some of whom are currently away on their annual holiday. Please understand that this email was with the best intention and never meant to cause any harm or unrest.

Once again

Many apologies.

Dan Groves

What happens now?

It is going to be an interesting meeting at the club tonight.

Full and Life Members were sent the following letter from Dave Bennett on the 8th August:

I am writing to give you an update on the proposed investment of funds into Dagenham & Redbridge FC Ltd.

Since my last letter on the 22nd July our discussions with solicitors and tax advisers are coming to fruition and we hope to be able to bring a firm proposal to you by the end of August with a view to holding a General Meeting of the Club in the second week of September.

During this period we have also received a request from five members requesting that a General Meeting of the Company be called pursuant to section 303 of the Companies act 2006. The Board has 28 days to comply with such a request and it is our intention to wait until we have a separate proposal that can also be included in the agenda for this meeting before we send out formal notice.

As previously mentioned we have continued to have dialogue with Glenn Tamplin with a view to be able to put forward a firm offer at the General Meeting. However talks are at such an advanced stage that Glenn has already shown his commitment to the club by agreeing for one of his companies to sponsor the club’s Family Stand over the next three years, a deal worth £45,000.00. This is in addition to any investment that might subsequently be agreed.

Part of our discussions with Glenn centred around the online abuse he, and his family, had received and I was able to persuade him that this was not indicative of the vast majority of our supporters. It was particularly helpful that I was able to tell him that this form of abuse was heavily condemned at the open meeting held on the 6th July. I also emphasised to him the need for members to meet him in advance of any formal meeting held.

To this end he has agreed to attend a friendly informal meeting of Full & Life Members to be held in the Club House on Monday 22nd August at 7.30pm. I do hope that as many of you as possible will attend when Glenn will outline his proposals to you and answer any questions you may have of him.

A further letter dated the 16th August, mainly describing logistical issues with regard to the meeting as West Ham United are holding an U23 Premier League game at the ground the same evening, Dave Bennett further stated:

With regard to the timetable for meetings going forward whilst Monday is not a formal meeting I am hoping that this will provide the Board with an indication of how you, the members, will wish us to proceed. It is then my intention for the Club Secretary to send out by Thursday 25th August a formal notice of an Extraordinary Meeting to be held on Tuesday 20th September. This meeting will include the proposition put forward by the 5 members that I mentioned in my previous letter together with a proposition detailing the offer made by the consortium made up of Glenn Tamplin, Christopher Smythe and myself; thereby giving you all the chance of voting on the propositions in one meeting.

In his statement yesterday, Dave Bennett assured supporters that "The meeting tomorrow night is an informal meeting, open only to full and life members, no formal voting can or will take place. Let me once again reassure you that no changes to the make up of the club can or will change without the members vote."

DiggerDagger is unable to attend or report on this meeting sadly, but will publish any information arising once it has any.
