Two goals from Craig Mackail-Smith and one from Jake Leberl was enough to see off Southport in the opening game of the 2005/06 Conference Season.

John Still started with almost the same team that played against Barnet in the last game of last season, with Shane Blackett coming in for Ashley Vickers who only returned to action in midweek from a knee injury.

Southport started brightly with Jerome Fitzgerald shooting over from a free-kick 25 yards out after a foul by Paul Bruce. It was pretty much end to end stuff after that, with Chris Moore hitting the cross bar from a Glen Southam corner as well as Steve Pickford being guilty of a bad miss when through one-on-one against Roberts. At the other end Jake Leberl had a rasping drive tipped over by Steve Dickinson in the Southport goal.

On the half hour mark Dagenham took the lead, once again from a Paul Bruce corner. The corner was struck to the back post, somehow by-passing everybody, where Mackail-Smith was waiting to put the ball acrobatically into the net.

Unfortunately the home side didn't capitalise on the lead, and almost directly from kick-off Southport had levelled. Failing to close down the opposition quickly gave Terry Fearns a chance to whip the ball in where Steve Daly headed into the net, not even an outstretched hand from Roberts able to stop the ball crossing the line.

The second half began with the Daggers starting alot brighter than 45 minutes previous, and within 5 minutes they'd taken the lead again. Consecutive corners, firstly from Southam and then Bruce led to a goalmouth scramle, where leberl was on-hand to smash the ball home from the edge of the 6 yard box. From then-on-in Dagenham began to take the game to Southport, firstly by Glen Southam flashing a shot wide and then with Steve Dickinson smartly saving from Paul Bruce. Craig Mackail-Smith was also causing trouble, including one weaving run past at least four players before placing the ball across goal, unfortunately with no-one getting on the end of it.

It wasn't all one way though, Terry Fearns having a shot comfortably saved by Tony Roberts. Some tidy work by Chris Moore, Paul Bruce and Scott Griffiths ended with the former having a shot blocked by Earl Davis. On 78 minutes Moore was replaced by Paul Benson, making his debut.

Southport hadn't given up yet though, and Roberts became the hero in the final minutes, pulling off a superb save from Steve Pickford around 25 yards out. There was still time for Dagenham to add to their tally and so they did. In the 3rd minute of injury time Paul Benson got to the by-line before smartly crossing the ball to the back post where Mackail-Smith was waiting for a simple tap-in.

That leaves the Daggers third after one game and one would hope they can keep this form going on the road, starting at Crawley Town on tuesday night.
