Daggers notch up first away win

The Daggers recorded their first away win of the season with a well fought 1-0 win over Northwich Victoria at Wincham Park.

Contrary to pre-match reports, the line-up included Mark Stein (left) up front with Alex Meechan starting as his strike partner and Leon Braithwaite relegated to the bench for the first time this season.

The Daggers were made to work hard for the win, though, and Northwich could have taken the lead early on, starting the game on the attack and not really allowing the visitors to settle.

Tony Roberts (left) pulled off a fine save from a Mark Barnard shot but could do nothing to prevent Jon Allan's cross from reaching the head of Chris Ward. Fortunately for the Daggers, though, Ward was only able to find the crossbar and the danger was cleared.

Northwich found the bar once again at the end of the first half when Chris Thomson tried a speculative shot from considerable distance after getting the better of Tim Cole.

Four minutes into the second half, however, and the Daggers finally took a stranglehold on the match when Alan Kimble (left) swung in a free-kick to the far post and Tim Cole rose above the defence to head the ball into the back of the net.

The Daggers then carried out a brilliant shut-out operations, preventing the home side from creating more than one chance in the second half. Dean Butterworth was fed the ball by Steve Garvey, splitting the defence, but Butterworth was only able to fire the ball straight at Roberts who cleared with his legs.

Deep into injury time, and the Daggers thought they had found a second goal but Steve Garvey cleared Leon Braithwaite's (right) effort off the line.
