Daggers legend Tony Roberts has been granted a testimonial by his other
employers, Queens Park Rangers, where he is currently goal keeping coach. Tony
previously made 122 appearances for QPR between 1987, when he joined as a
trainee, and 1998.
On leaving Rangers he signed for Millwall and suffered the hand injury that
led to him giving up professional football. He was then persuaded back to the
game by Garry Hill at St Albans City, and followed Garry to the Daggers in the
summer of 2000.
The testimonial evening will take place at Loftus Road on Monday August 4th.
There will be 40 minute curtain raiser game featuring many of the stars that
played with Tony at QPR including Les Ferdinand, Dave Bardsley, Danny Maddix, Paul Parker, Clive Wilson, Trevor Sinclair, Steve Hodge, Andy Sinton, Mark Stein, Danny Dichio, Dennis Bailey, Ray Wilkins, Ian Holloway, Andy Impey, Rufus Brevett, Darren Peacock, Brian Law, Alan McDonald and Paul Murray.
This will be followed by a match between QPR and
Charlton Athletic kicking off at 7:45pm.
Tickets are on sale at the Dagenham & Redbridge clubhouse priced at £10
for adults and £5 for concessions. The Daggers fans have been allocated their
own section in the ground in the South Africa Road stand.
Tony is quoted as having said "I hope all the Daggers fans will turn out
and show the Hoops fans how it's done. I hope you enjoy the night and that the
Barmy Army and trumpet boy and everyone else all turn out to support me. I want
there to be an atmosphere like at FGR with their samba band!!"
Tony is fighting hard to be fit enough to play in the testimonial game following his recent double hernia operation. Things are looking good for him to be playing as on 30/6/03.
The Supporters club are
running a coach to the game departing from the club at 5pm. This is priced at £6
and tickets are for sale from behind the clubhouse bar. Full details are at the
Supporters Club page at DaggerNet.
