Daggers see off Blues - eventually

The Daggers were made to dig deep at Grays on Tuesday to secure an extra time win in this season's Essex Senior Cup opener.

Fielding a mixed strength team with only four starters from the weekend's Conference fixture retained the Daggers went behind on 23 minutes to a Wayne Vaughan goal. They were back level by half time though when Ben Lewis brought down triallist Triston Chambers in the box, and Paul Bruce (right) sent Lunan the wrong way from the penalty spot.

The second half was end-to end throughout with chances to both sides. It looked like the Daggers had done enough when Mark Stein (left), returning from injury as a second half substitute, ended a session of goalmouth pinball to put the visitors 2-1 up with 10 minutes left.

It wasn't to be as Grays stormed back, equalising with a header from ex-Dagger Jeff Woolsey with three minutes left and then seeing a goal line clearance from Steve Vaughan to deny them the win. So at 2-2 and with the Rec shrouded in smoke, evidence that it was Guy Fawkes night, the game went into extra time.

The Daggers went ahead again after only 4 minutes of the extra period, Steve West heading home Charlton loanee Yohance Lewis' corner. Still Grays stormed back, Woolsey hitting the bar with Paul Gothard well beaten, but at the death Mark Janney (right) finished the game with a neat finish from a fine individual run. Mark Stein almost added a fifth in injury time which would have been rough justice for the Blues, but his shot crept just wide.

The draw for the 4th Round of the competition will be on Friday November the 15th.
