Daggers were made to dig deep at Grays on Tuesday to secure an extra time win in
this season's Essex Senior Cup opener.
Fielding a mixed strength team with only four starters from the weekend's
Conference fixture retained the Daggers went behind on 23 minutes to a Wayne
Vaughan goal. They were back level by half time though when Ben Lewis brought down
triallist Triston Chambers in the box, and Paul Bruce (right) sent Lunan the wrong way from the
second half was end-to end throughout with chances to both sides. It looked like
the Daggers had done enough when Mark Stein (left), returning from injury as a
second half substitute, ended a session of goalmouth pinball to put the visitors
2-1 up with 10 minutes left.
It wasn't to be as Grays stormed back, equalising with a header from
ex-Dagger Jeff Woolsey with three minutes left and then seeing a goal line
clearance from Steve Vaughan to deny them the win. So at 2-2 and with the Rec shrouded in
smoke, evidence that it was Guy Fawkes night, the game went into extra
Daggers went ahead again after only 4 minutes of the extra period, Steve West
heading home Charlton loanee Yohance Lewis' corner. Still Grays stormed back,
Woolsey hitting the bar with Paul Gothard well beaten, but at the death Mark
Janney (right) finished the game with a neat finish from a fine individual run.
Mark Stein almost added a fifth in injury time which would have been rough
justice for the Blues, but his shot crept just wide.
