Recent History

Ipswich were formed as an amateur club in 1878, and it was not until 1936 when they turned professional. After winning the Southern League at the first attempt and finishing third the following season, they were elected to the Football League on May 30th, 1938.

They have had a sucession of well known and successful managers Including Alf Ramsey, Jackie Milburn, Bobby Robson and John Lyall to today's encumbant, long term Town favorite George Burley. Both Ramsey and Robson left Ipswich only to take on the England job.

Ramsey's side won the Division 1 Championship in 1962, but arguably Ipswich's best period was in the 70's and early 80's under Bobby Robson when they were at the forefront of the continental invasion with Dutchmen Arnold Muhren and Frans Thijssen joining Mick Mills, Alan Butcher and Russell Osman among others in the great side that beat Arsenal 1-0 at Wembley to win the FA Cup. They dropped back to Division 2 in the late 80's and won promotion to the newly formed Premiership in 1992, surviving 3 seasons before being again relegated.

Ipswich became perennial bridesmaids during the late 90's reaching 4 successive play-off finals before finally winning the fourth in 2000 to get back to the Premiership. Favorites for relegation last season, in fact they took the league by storm being in the top 6 most of the season and eventually finishing 5th with a UEFA Cup place.

This season they have struggled to match that form and stand bottom of the Premiership at Christmas 2001. They have had a great UEFA Cup run though, beating Torpedo Moscow and Helsingborg before losing 2-4 on aggregate to Inter Milan having beaten them 1-0 at Portman Road.

Their ten season league record stands as follows:
